Day in the Life of a Partner – Melissa McCrystal

I, Melissa McCrystal, commenced my career as an Undergraduate Accountant at Accru Rawsons in 1996 working three days a week whilst completing my last semester at University full time.  

Although it was a juggle, this assisted my ability to prioritise and work under pressure which would become invaluable as my career progressed.  

From that start as an undergraduate, I progressed through the firm and became a Partner in 2008. Embarking on the journey to become a Partner has been challenging but incredibly rewarding. 

Starting in a junior role gave me the opportunity to grow alongside clients and learn all facets of the business.

Each day is different and brings strategic challenges, leadership opportunities and the satisfaction of ensuring clients’ success is managed with attentiveness and foresight. 

Here’s a glimpse into a typical day in the life of my role as Partner at Accru Rawsons.

Morning: Setting the Tone & Client Focus

The morning starts early with reviewing emails that have arrived overnight and planning the day ahead by prioritising tasks.  

I will also focus on client or staff requests that need my review and approval. Ensure relevant tasks are actioned or delegated to the right people. Communication and time management is crucial to the success of Accru Rawsons’ team and clients.

Mid-Morning: Client Focus, Networking & Mentoring

Mid-Morning is the optimal time to meet with clients to discuss their business and how we can assist with tax planning strategies, reviewing reports, cash flow discussions and the like to help improve their businesses.

Following client meetings, I review messages and emails. Now is also the time to review deadlines and ensure staff are on track with their priorities and provide assistance and mentorship where required.

Midday: Building Relationships & Professional Development

Lunch time is an opportunity for connection and building relationships. This may involve sharing lunch with our team, clients or network contacts. 

This time can also be a great chance to keep professional development up to date and join a relevant webinar or seminar to strengthen knowledge. It’s important I keep informed on industry updates, tax, regulation and technology.

Afternoon: Strategy & Leadership

I will generally spend the afternoon responding to new client enquires where applicable and working on our own business. 

Working on our business is as important as assisting clients. This will usually take the form of staff meetings, partner meetings and ongoing improvement re processes and technology to optimise the business.

Finalising work to be delivered to clients is usually the last thing to do for the day before reviewing the calendar for the following day to ensure I know what the team and my own priorities are and that we are prepared for what is to come tomorrow.
