In this staff story, James Howard shares his personal journey at Accru Harris Orchard — from his first steps into the firm to where he is today.
Starting Out
I’m James Howard and I work as a graduate accountant at Accru Harris Orchard in Adelaide. I’ve been with the firm for four years now, joining their Undergraduate Program while I was studying Accounting and Corporate Finance at The University of Adelaide.
Before joining Accru Harris Orchard, I worked a few casual jobs and had a short stint as a labourer – but I was keen to find something more aligned with where I wanted to take my career. The opportunity to work in a professional environment while still at uni really appealed to me. I was able to get real-world experience, learn directly from experienced accountants, and still have the flexibility I needed to focus on my studies. That early exposure gave me a great head start.
Growing Into the Role
Since finishing my degree, I’ve stepped into a full-time role and taken on more responsibility, including more direct contact with clients. I work in Business Services, mainly focusing on tax compliance and business advisory. I’ve always enjoyed problem-solving, so I like working closely with clients to tailor solutions that suit their needs – and hopefully take some of the stress off their plate so they can concentrate on running their business.
Working With Clients
Most of the clients I work with are small to medium-sized businesses, and I enjoy the personal side of those relationships. You really get to know the people behind the business, and it feels like you’re contributing to something meaningful.
Why I Love It Here
One of the highlights of my time here has been moving from being part of the Undergraduate Program to now mentoring new students coming through the Program. It feels pretty special to be able to help others starting their journey the same way I did.
What I enjoy most about working at Accru Harris Orchard is the people. We’ve got a great mix of experience and youth, and I’ve been lucky to work with colleagues who are not only knowledgeable but also supportive and easy to talk to. There’s always someone willing to listen or lend a hand.
Life Outside the Office
Outside of work, I’m a keen sportsman – I play cricket in summer and footy in winter. I’m also planning a backpacking trip soon. I’ve got a long list of places I want to visit – from hiking through the Dolomites to running with the bulls in Pamplona. I can’t wait to explore more of the world.
