There’s a lot of history at Accru Hobart, May 12 represents an important milestone having provided accounting, taxation and business advice to local businesses for over 40 years.
The company began as Steele and Braint in 1975. It was borne out of the need to serve local businesses cut off from the Hobart City after the Tasman Bridge disaster.
In 2000, it took an important step and became part of the Accru group. This allowed access to shared knowledge, networks and resources in an increasingly competitive marketplace.
Despite doing so, the company still remains a locally owned entity with current partners Tim Lane & Michael Burnett having been with the firm for 7 and 22 years respectively.
Mr Burnett said that over the years, the manner of delivery and accessing information has changed “from hand-written ledgers to cloud- based accounting programs, but our personal connection built over 40 years remains paramount.”
“We put people first. Numbers and logic are important, but equally important is the ability to understand, empathise and deliver at a personal level, communicating in a way our clients understand,” he said.
Bestselling novelist and client, Ms Rachael Treasure shared her word of thanks. “Your willingness to understand an unusual income circumstance as an artist has been a Godsend. Your professional services and personal care to an individual is greatly appreciated.”
Mr Burnett added that Accru Hobart also hires from within the community, not only providing job opportunities for UTAS graduates, but also internship opportunities to school leavers from various Hobart colleges.
“Over the past 40 years, we have given over 30 accountants a start in their career. We give them an opportunity to learn the realities of accounting, balanced with the theory whilst they study. This has helped us to nurture good people and also given many a chance to work, earn a living, and get some real world experience before forging their career at and beyond Accru,” he said.
Accru won the Financial Review Client Choice Awards 2015 and is short-listed as a finalist in the Employer of Choice Award 2015.
To celebrate its 40th anniversary, Accru Hobart will be offering free 40 minute financial advice each Friday till June for those who are looking for a property, getting a first loan, starting a business or simply wanting to understand debt and taxation.
